It's a typical American dream story: A man working for someone else comes up with a million-dollar idea. Taking a deep breath, he leaves his employer to strike out on his own, and parlay that entreprenurial spirit into a multi-million dollar business. Gerald Downey was the man, the world's first aluminum framed tonneau cover was the idea, and Downey Products, Inc is that multi-million dollar company.
The idea first came to Downey in 1977 when he was working for a Syracuse, NY canvas company. While considering a tonneau for his own truck, he realized he that traditional method of attaching the cover to the bed (using up to 80 snaps screwed into the truck bed itself) did not appeal to him. Instead he took the idea of a framed commercial awning and applied it to the bed of his truck. The benefits of the the design were quickly recognized by Downey's friends and neighbors who began requesting Downey's framed tonneaus for their own trucks. Eventually the tonneau business grew to such an extent that it became the full focus of the company's efforts.
Today Downey Products is based in North Carolina. The firm is headquartered in a 22,000 square foot manufacturing facility and plans to add another 7,000 square feet in the near future. Throughout their 20 years of operation, Downey has listened to and evaluated customer comments and suggestions to continually engineer improvements in their tonneau covers. |
